In accordance with Dillon Municipal Code 6.04, dogs over the age of five (5) months within the city limits shall not be kept or harbored unless such dogs are licensed. Licenses are issued annually, and are non-transferable between dogs. PROOF OF RABIES VACCINATION is required for any dog over five (5) months.

2024 License Rates:

Spayed/Neutered Dogs: $10 Intact Dogs: $25

Kennel License (more than three dogs) $25 + individual license fee

In accordance with Dillon Municipal Code 6.08, keeping of chickens is authorized only by an annual permit obtained from the City of Dillon. Roosters shall not be kept or maintained within the city limits., and no more than one (1) permit may be issued per household.

Does my dog need to be on a leash?

Per city ordinance, “RESTRAINT” means an animal controlled by a leash not longer than eight feet, an animal at “heel” beside a competent person and obedient to that person’s command, an animal within the passenger compartment of a parked vehicle with the permission of the owner, an animal within the bed of a parked vehicle controlled by a leash attached to the vehicle, or an animal within the property limits of the premises controlled by the owner or other person consenting thereto.

Who do I contact if my dog is impounded?

If your dog is impounded, it will be taken to Dillon City Hall at 125 North Idaho Street. The dog will be held up to 72 hours before being relinquished to the Beaverhead Animal Shelter. If it has a tag, Animal Control will notify the owner within one business day that the dog is impounded and how it can be redeemed. Impound fees are $15 for the first day, and $10 each subsequent day. All dogs must have a current city license prior to being released.

What are the consequences to a loud or frequent barking dog?

Loud or frequent barking, howling or yelping is considered disturbing the peace, and the owner is subject to substantial penalties under the Dillon Municipal Code.

Do I have to pick up my dogs feces?

Yes. Any person who owns or is in control of a dog or other domestic animal that deposits feces in any City park, City boulevard, or other City-owned property, or any other property, public or private, other than the premises of the owner or handler shall be guilty of a misdemeanor unless the owner of such property consents thereto.

How do I report a lost dog?

If the dog has a current City of Dillon license, you can call Dillon City Hall at 406-683-4245, for the owner’s information or for Animal Control to come pick up the animal. If it is after hours or on a weekend, call the Dillon Police Department Dispatch at 406-683-3701.

Can my chickens free-range?

Chickens shall not range at large within the corporate limits of the City of Dillon and shall be contained within the permittee’s property boundary at all times. They also shall be secured within an enclosure from sunset to sunrise
